The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Duoye Diri has just been proclaimed the winner of the Bayelsa election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The INEC Chairman just made this declaration at the INEC headquarters in Abuja and he said that the certificate of return has been issued immediately to the winner.
Politics in Nigeria is becoming a child’s play oh. First of was the Imo state election and now Bayelsa state. Sometime last month Hope Uzodinma who came forth in the Imo States election was declared the winner by the Supreme Court. The election took place on the 4th of March 2019 but the results of the election were challenged by the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Note that INEC had early announced its results in the favor of the incumbent Governor of the state, Emeka Ihedioha who is a candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). But after court hearings, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of APC’s candidate Hope Uzodinma.
In the case of the Bayelsa election, Bayelsa State governor-elect, David Lyon, and his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, were declared winners and they were already preparing to be inaugurated on Friday which is today. The events took a 360 turn when the Supreme Court declared Duoye Diri the winner of the election.
What kind of vetting process did Degi Erwmienyo go through at INEC and his party, APC? He submitted certificates bearing different names for his First School Leaving Cert., Secondary School, University, NYSC, and even Masters. How is that even possible?
How did the All Progressive Congress (APC) miss that? Or did they think that it didn’t matter? And how did INEC miss that also during his vetting? Is it that INEC does not go through the credentials submitted by various candidates? Does this mean that our politicians run with fake credentials? Where is ICPC, DSS, and the Police when you need them?
From what I hear there is an angry mob in front of the statehouse in Bayelsa, who I am sure are not pleased with the ruling of the Supreme Court and are protesting against it. But that is rather a waste of time because the has already been issued to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Duoye Diri which means there is no turning back.
I am not so sure of the events that preceded the change in the outcome of the elections but I do not think that there was any protest or anger demonstration after the ruling of the Supreme Court. But that is not the case with The Bayelsa election because information reaching me now is that the Secretariat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been set on fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be identified.
Setting fire to the PDP’s secretariat would not change what has already happened? Nobody knows who is behind the first outbreak as at now but the APC has put up a barricade in its secretariat. Are they afraid of retaliation? Who do you think is behind the fire at PDP’s secretariat?
