The  battle-line between the People Democratic party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Edo state has been drawn. The September election will be between the party with the federal might and one with the power of the state.

With the resignation of the current governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, from the APC and his emergence as the PDP candidate, we can say that the state has been thrown open for new and unprecedented possibility.

The All Progressive Congresses is going through a crisis at the moment. Right from the national level to ward levels in some Progressive states, the foundation of the party is being called to answer tough questions. The crisis is making a joke out of the party that claims to be progressive.

The elections will be tough because both parties will be out to prove a point as regards their popularity. The candidate of the PDP and APC, Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu respectively, will go through a lot of waters to see who will become victorious in the governorship contest come September 2020. However, the PDP might have the better of the APC when you consider the obvious factors i will be sharing below.

 APC’s Crisis

The All Progressive Congress (APC) has, for a very long time, fire burning in its ranks. As a matter of fact, this crisis led to the loss of important states that APC had winning chances. States like Rivers, Zamfara and Bayelsa were lost because of these crises with their legal ramification. Edo State might also fall to this list because there are factions in the party fighting for legitimacy. PDP, if they play their games right, could use this to get victory.

Senatorial Advantage of the PDP

the People Democratic Party (PDP) presently boast of two senatorial seats in the state. With this political leverage, they can deal a huge blow to the ambition of the APC in the state.

The Removal Of Adams Oshiomole

Just last week, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered that the National Executive Council of the party Led by the former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomole, be dislodged of their seats because of the crisis in the party. The President said he was tired of the legal battles and chaos that have engulfed the party since the emergence of Oshiomole as Chairman. This means that the former national chairman of the party is no longer powerful or influential enough to pull the power of the party to ensure victory of the APC Candidate in the governorship election in the state.

Fraud Allegation Against APC Candidate

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu is presently standing trial for alleged N700 Million fraud brought against by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The People of Edo State are not stupid to ignore the fact that the candidate of the APC has stolen from them while he was a public office holder in the state.

Power and influence of the Sitting Governor

The power and influence of the sitting governor Godwin Obaseki but in the state and in his former party will be very useful for him in his race for a second term. Obaseki, who instigated a word chairman to suspend the Chairman of the APC, will definitely still have a relative amount of influence on some other members in the party. He might use his influence to dismantle the hold of the APC in the state. He will also use his authority and power as the governor of the state to make things go his way. He might not hesitate to use state funds to finance his reelection bid.
